I Am Groot

A while back I went to the movies and I saw the coolest popcorn bucket ever. There on display was Groot staring at me, calling my name, “I am Groot”…which translated to “Nabila, buy me”. I normally never buy food at movie theaters; we all know how obscenely expensive it is. With the price of what you pay, you can easily buy 2 more movie tickets. BUT…how can I say no to Groot, amirite? So I bought a $11 bucket of popcorn just for Groot.
I immediately knew I wanted to turn popcorn bucket Groot into a potted planter Groot. It’s just so perfect, ya know? How could I not? So, I went to my Abuelita’s garden and looked for a plant that would be perfect for Groot. I wanted it to appear as if Groot had hair coming out of it’s head. Unfortunately, Abuelita didn’t have a plant like the one I envisioned in her garden, so I ran to Home Depot and the plant that I found couldn’t have been more perfect!

I actually don’t remember what this plant is called, I just know that it blooms during the day and becomes a hermit at night. According to my Abuelita, they’re nicknamed “Buenos Dias” or “Sonrisa de Gaitan”. According to my mum, they should be called “Mata Despelucada” (translates to: Messy Hair Plant). You know, it kinda looks like me when I wake up…
If anyone knows the name of this plant, let me know please! 🙂

Vader Easter Bunny~

Do you ever just find something in your closet that you completely forgot you owned and as soon as you touch the fabric all these memories just shwoosh right back into your life? This happened to me yesterday morning when I was contemplating what to wear to my family’s Easter get-together. Last time I wore this dress..heck, the last time I saw it with my own two eyes, was back in 2007 for Grad Nite. That’s right, 9 years ago. This means one of two things: either A. I haven’t cleaned out my closet in 9 years, which is pretty possible…OR B. there’s a black hole in there and it mysteriously burped out the dress when it heard my pleas, causing me to find it. IDK. All I know is that I was glad I found it because I had no idea what I was going to wear.

Whenever I think of Easter in terms of fashion, I think of pastel colors and flowers and pretty dresses. Since I don’t own a flowery pastel-colored pretty dress, I really wasn’t sure what I was going to wear and was ready for a “what-the-hell-am-I-gonna-wear”battle. But then that thing happened and I found this flowery dress. Now, it’s not pastel and it’s prettiness can be questionable (I mean, I think it’s pretty…but you, dear reader, might not think so… it is rather outdated..idk) but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one. Kind of like when I was a Senior looking for the perfect outfit to wear to Grad Nite. I remember looking everywhere and nothing was convincing me..but then I saw this dress at Forever21 and just knew. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a dress…it might be one of those long shirts you’re supposed to wear with leggings (I remember that being in style back in ’07). But, since I’m a short one, I get to wear it as a dress. Although, if I remember correctly, I wore black tights to Grad Nite…’cos this is still a pretty short “dress”.

ANYWHO, so yeah. This is what I wore for Easter~ Do you have any go-to Easter fashion trends?

vader        When I was a little girl, I dreamt about wearing this dress. It belonged to my godmother and I loved seeing her wear it. She made it about 25 (or so) years ago. Yup, that’s right, she sew’d it together and voilà, made a dress. Having an aunt who makes her own clothes is pretty rad, especially when she makes clothes for you. It’s been a while since she’s sewn anything, but the clothes she’s made in the past are pretty fantastic. She’s made me flamenco dresses (I’ll have to make a post about them one day…surprisingly, they still fit! Not sure if I should feel proud about that considering I was 14 at the time), my 15’s dress (which was a gauzy purple dream), and other pieces here and there. She’s amazing. When I was a kid I wanted to learn how to sew just like her. I visualized myself wearing my own designs and never having to go back to the mall again. Heck, I still do! No, I never learnt how to sew, but never say never, amirite? It’s still something I want to learn how to do.

Anywho, back to this dress; when I turned 17 I inherited it and for years I kept it in my closet. Every single time I looked at it, it made me feel nostalgic and nice inside (is that weird?…) and I daydreamed about what things the dress had seen, and what it knew. I took it with me to Tallahassee when I lived there and even pinned it on my wall like hipsters do. It was my favorite dress. At the time I didn’t like wearing long dresses. They made me feel short (I am short!) and I guess I hadn’t come to terms with that. Which is why after 9 yrs of owning the dress, I wore it for the first time last year and it fit me perfectly. I imagined my aunt wearing it and thought “How cool is it that it fits me! This is history!”

About the Vader mask: a silly idea I had at 3am one time. “Lady Vader”. Darth Vader meets fashion. Idk…it seemed like a good idea at the time, hah.

Hey Look Listen!

vader&me

Hi there! Nabila here! You can call me Nabi for short if you’d like. This little slice of the internet is dedicated to all of my geeky & weird antics. From fashion posts to photographs of amiibos & other figurines to videogame talk and geeking out over the new Star Wars films.

A couple of things:
My full name is Nabila Verushka Nassar. Verushka is a made up middle name I gave myself back in 2010. When I was born my mum didn’t give me a middle name and for most of my life I longed for one. I honestly can’t remember how I came up with Verushka but I’m sure it was a good story.

I was first introduced to Star Wars when I was a kid and I’ve loved it ever since. I have to thank my big brother for that one. My favorite character is probably Darth Vader (my huge collection will tell you that). Second favorite character is that badass R2D2, and BB-8 is just plain adorable. He’s like a little hamster you want to protect from the world.

❀I am currently obsessed with The Legend of Zelda. I’ve been playing Ocarina of Time for the past month (ugh why does real life have to interfere with video game time??) and I’m excited for the release of Hyrule Warriors Legends. My name, Nabi, is like Navi and I frakin’ love that so much. You’ll probably find a lot of “Hey! Look! Listen!” around this blog.

❀I was sorted into Slytherin today on Pottermore. Back in middle school & highschool I fancied myself a Gryffindor. I wish Pottermore existed back then. One of my guilty pleasures is Harry Potter fan fiction. Wait what..?

❀I love stickers and snail mail! I have overflowing drawers full of postcards and stationary. I keep telling myself that I can’t buy anymore but..well..that never happens. It’s those Target trips! They always have cute things!! My most prized stationary is my Lisa Frank pack. It’s almost vintage! If you ever want to exchange postcards/letters, I would be so down for that!

❀I currently attend FIU and I’m in the process of getting a Bachelors in Business Management and Photography. I want to have my own photography business one day so I figured I should study business so I know what I’m doing. I’ve also wanted to work for National Geographic…I mean, to get paid to travel and take pictures all around the world?! That’s a dream come true!

Blah Blah Blah wow I wrote a lot for my first post! I basically just wanted to welcome you to my lil blog and got a little carried away! D’oh! ❤

xoxo,
Nabi
