There once was a time when Poppy Porg wanted a bee friend.
She saw how much bees adored flowers, and if she was a flower, maybe she could find her own bee friend to love her, too.
Poppy, being the incredibly smart Porg that she was, wore a flower hat in hopes of attracting one.
Oh, it wasn’t easy. She wore her flower hat everywhere she went, but no bee dared approach her.
Poppy didn’t want to give up.
She knew that her expertly placed flower hat and persistence would soon prevail.
So, she waited.
And waited some more. Poor Poppy.
She went to different places, hoping a bee friend would stop by.
A bee friend approached her!
And they became fast friends.
They gushed over the sweetness of honey (Porgs like honey too), dreamcatchers, and the importance of pizza parties.
That day, Poppy learnt that if you at first don’t succeed in attracting bee friends, wear a flower hat and you eventually will. She also learnt that even though the universe is big, when you have friends- especially bee friends- it doesn’t appear as scary or lonely.
Note: no porgs or bees were harmed during the making of this silly story.
Recently I found this tiny dinosaur I got from Photojojo a couple of years ago. It was hiding in a tiny crook in my closet. It was 2am when the light bulb that constantly floats on top of my head lit up💡
So listen, this is a new photo series featuring the One Tiny Dinosaur called Archer. The adventures of a tiny dinosaur in not so tiny places ✨
(So, for this shot I had to raise my leg in mid air as if I was some sort of ballerina dancer/ yoga master. You can’t tell, but my leg was shaking like crazy. I definitely need to work out more and build resistance 💪🏼 lol)
I’ve been meaning to write about Geek Girl Brunch Miami for a while now, and look I’m finally doing it! I’ve had this post sitting in my drafts for the past 6 months, and I know I know, that’s pretty terrible. But better late than never, amirite?
Geek Girl Brunch Miami has been such an amazing thing in my life, that if it was disbanded tomorrow I would cry enough to make an 8th ocean.
When I moved back to Miami from Tallahassee a couple of years ago, I didn’t have the group of amazing ladies I now call friends. Most of my evenings and weekends consisted of hanging out with my boyfriend Erik, or family. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE spending time with Erik and I enjoy the times I spend with my family, but a girl needs girl friends and I didn’t really have any when I moved back. My memory is sometimes shitty, so I can’t really remember how I learned about Geek Girl Brunch, but I will tell you this: the first time I went to a Geek Girl Brunch outing I felt like I finally came home. These were girls that shared the same interests and tastes about tv shows, movies, video games, animes, etc. I felt like I had struck gold! And I was sooo giddy.
Since I waited super long to post about the awesomeness that is Geek Girl Brunch Miami, I’m going to be posting about the several brunches I’ve attended throughout these 2 years (woahh, has it been two years already??!). Since there’s SO MANY I’ve attended (about 14…say whaaat), I will be dedicating Time Travel Thursdays to each one (my version of #throwbackthursday, hehe).
So, before I get started; What is Geek Girl Brunch? Geek Girl Brunch is basically a community of geeky women who get together once a month to brunch and geek over geeky things. Each brunch is themed and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their favorite geeky attire or cosplay. Themes we’ve had include Harry Potter, Sherlock, Sailor Moon, Game of Thrones, Video Games, Murder Boyfriends (hah, I know you’ll understand in time), Star Wars Rogue One, and many many more.
Sooo, let’s get started! The Sailor Moon themed brunch took place many moons ago, on February 2016. This isn’t the very first brunch I attended, but it’s the first one I’ll be sharing with you, dear reader. When I was looking through my external for all the brunch pics I’ve taken (which btw, there’s about a gajillion!), these were the first ones that popped up.
The Sailor Moon themed brunch was held at Ra Sushi in South Miami. The staff surprised us with their own Sailor Moon decorations!
For the brunch, I dressed up as Sailor Mars. As a child, she was my favorite because she had black hair like me…but as an adult, Usagi is my fave because well..she’s pretty much me.
If you’re interested in Geek Girl Brunch Miami, it’s super simple and free to join! And if you don’t live in Miami but wish you could be a part of something cool like this, well you’re in luck because Geek Girl Brunch is actually all over the World! Check out if there’s a chapter in your neck of the woods here.
*Protip For Miami Brunchettes: since seats are limited, depending on the brunch, tickets sell out REALLY fast. I suggest you set an alarm (or two) for when the brunch evites go out. Otherwise, you might miss out on all the fun times.
✿ You know when you write something in your planner for weeks & weeks in advance and it seems like it’s in forever and that day won’t arrive any time soon until it creeps up on you and you’re left thinking “WHERE did time go?”? Yeah, that’s me right now. School starts today and I’m feeling certain kinds of way about it. Part of me is excited about this new semester; all the new information I’ll be learning, the cute notebooks I’ll be filling with valuable knowledge (and doodles), and…and well that’s basically it. The other part of me is saying NO THANKS; making me want to stick out my tongue, stomp my feet, and exclaim “I’m not ready!! Give me another week!”. This semester I’m practically a hermit though, with mostly online classes and one on campus. Which is GREAT! I’m still trying to change my one campus class to an online one, so fingers & toes crossed that I can! (Drop/Add week don’t fail me now..)
Adorable Kissy Total Solar Eclipse Sun & Moon from ThinkGeek
✿ Coincidentally, the Solar Eclipse happens to fall today as well! It’s the first since 1918 that we’ll be seeing the total solar eclipse travel across America! In Miami, this is what we’ll be seeing:
If you’re interested to see what it’ll look like in your neck of the woods, check it out here!
Unfortunately, I don’t have any plans to watch it since I’ll be working. I know we’ve all probably have heard to not stare at the eclipse with naked eyes because it can cause real serious damage to them…and well, it’s true! According to NASA, “The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses.'” If you, for some dumb reason, decide to look at the sun with your naked eye during the eclipse, you can burn your retina. This means that you’ll damage the images your brain can view. If this does happen, you’ll cause temporary or permanent vision impairment, and could possibly become blind. So, if you’re reading this before the eclipse happens, don’t do it! Don’t stare at it with unprotected eyes! IF you did in fact stare at it with out any protection, then you won’t be able to read this in the first place…so, sorry dude.
✿ So anywho, today I decided to wear my NASA shirt because it’s just soooo apropos, no? And paired it with my Star Wars “Rey Rebel Bag”. It kinda has that retro airlines feel to it, which I absolutely adore. Story behind the bag: I went to BoxLunch (the one in International Mall in Miami, FL) on a random Tuesday a couple of weeks ago, and they were having a Buy 1, Get 2 Free clearance sale. YES. THAT’S RIGHT. Buy one, get TWO FREE. So, ofcourse I hopped on that clearance train and snagged this and another bag that is similar, except that it says Pokémon Trainer (which I will be posting about later on!). It’s pretty spacious (my camera fits in it if I want the boxy look), and perfect for school notebooks and misc supplies.
And it’s got a little chain with a BB-8 and the word Scavenger attached to it. Pretty adorbs, no?
✿ Are you heading back to school today, too? If so, do you like to dress up (you know how important first impressions are), or do you go for a more relaxed look? And if you’re an FIU student, like me, and spot me on campus, feel free to say hi! ◕ᴗ◕✿
A while back I went to the movies and I saw the coolest popcorn bucket ever. There on display was Groot staring at me, calling my name, “I am Groot”…which translated to “Nabila, buy me”. I normally never buy food at movie theaters; we all know how obscenely expensive it is. With the price of what you pay, you can easily buy 2 more movie tickets. BUT…how can I say no to Groot, amirite? So I bought a $11 bucket of popcorn just for Groot.
I immediately knew I wanted to turn popcorn bucket Groot into a potted planter Groot. It’s just so perfect, ya know? How could I not? So, I went to my Abuelita’s garden and looked for a plant that would be perfect for Groot. I wanted it to appear as if Groot had hair coming out of it’s head. Unfortunately, Abuelita didn’t have a plant like the one I envisioned in her garden, so I ran to Home Depot and the plant that I found couldn’t have been more perfect!
I actually don’t remember what this plant is called, I just know that it blooms during the day and becomes a hermit at night. According to my Abuelita, they’re nicknamed “Buenos Dias” or “Sonrisa de Gaitan”. According to my mum, they should be called “Mata Despelucada” (translates to: Messy Hair Plant). You know, it kinda looks like me when I wake up…
If anyone knows the name of this plant, let me know please! 🙂
A couple of Saturdays ago I got to attend a South Florida Bloggers event for Coopers’ Craft Bourbon at House Kitchen & Bar in Coral Gables. I had a real blast trying out different cocktails and hanging out with fellow bloggers!
Of all the cocktails I tried, my favorite one was the Coopers’ Cup. First of all, it came in a real cute tin cup..which we got to keep! The drink itself was smooth and it didn’t make my throat burn like crazy. I really liked the combination of bourbon + ginger beer.
In case you’re dying to know how to create this drink, here’s the recipe!
(All recipes are courtesy of Henry from ABC Bartending)
2 parts Coopers’ Craft
1 part fresh lime juice
top with ginger beer (roughly 6 parts)
Served over crushed ice in tin cup, garnished with mint sprig
Combine Coopers’ Craft Bourbon with lime juice. Add ginger beer and serve over ice in tin cup. Garnish with mint Sprig.
Here’s Henry (from ABC Bartending) making the Coopers’ Cup!
I loved the Coopers’ Cup so much, that I took a million pictures of it!
I’m just really obsessed with these tin cups & mint sprig….
The next cocktail we tried was the Kentucky Luxedo.
The recipe for this one:
1 part Coopers’ Craft
1/4 part Maraschino Liqueur
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Muddled Sugar Cube
Combine Coopers’ and Maraschino Liqueur into a mixing glass and stir with a bar spoon. Muddle sugar and bitters at the bottom of an old fashioned glass. Add ice and strain into a mixing glass into glass with sugar and bitter mixture. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.
The last cocktail was the After Barrel. We actually learnt how to make this one ourselves!
2 oz. Cooper’s Craft Bourbon
4 Sliced Strawberries
1/2 oz. Peach liquor
Place blueberries and strawberries in a shaker. Pour Peach liquor over the berries. Muddle the strawberries, blueberries and peach liquor to release the juices. Add Cooper’s Craft Bourbon and orange bitters for a nice tang. Add ice cubes and shake. Pour and enjoy!
This was probably the most pretty looking one!
We also got to try very delicious foods from House Kitchen & Bar:
Everything was so yummy! I definitely recommend this place. It was my first time trying their food and I was extremely satisfied. My favorite was probably the Margarita pizza (ofcourse!).
Here are some more pictures of the event. I loved the whole set up.
So, I met the cutest doggie! His name is Hamilton Barkley and he wears cutie bowties. :3
Last month I attended Hatch Miami, an outdoor craft fair showcasing amazing talented women vendors. Everything from beautiful artwork, super cute handmade goodies, delicious food & drinks, performances, and other provisions. It was great seeing so many lady bosses in one place! I went almost crazy buying and taking lots of pictures of everything. I didn’t get a chance to go to every single vendor (why, I dunno? and I’m kicking myself for it), but next time Hatch Miami rolls into town, I’m definitely going to make it a goal to visit every single one. So like I said, I took a million photos. Here are some of my favorites. If you like what you see, be sure to click on the links that’ll take you straight to the vendors!
Kawaii fruit pen–yes, those are tiny strawberry confetti in the dangly ball! Obsessed.
This is a pencil pouch! The cutest pencil pouch! I might use it as a makeup pouch…
Ugly 0g ….I can’t! hehehe
Cute mini notebook. It reminded me of the anime Your Lie in April.
Circus Critters Mini Memo Set. I get weak in the knees for adorable stationary stuff.
Tall Kitty Pen is cute CUTE cute.
Would you believe me if I said I spent less than $12 at this vendor? Because I totally did. So cheap and so cute! I would have bought more but I needed to contain myself.
Chubby Unicorn is life! And this wooden necklace is perfection. The blue background detaches itself if you so choose, so you get 2 necklaces in 1!
Chubby Unicorn dressed as Eleven from Stranger Things. OMG.
Not sure when the next Hatch Miami is going to be, but I can’t wait! If you’re reading this and thought to yourself “Wow, I really wish I had known about this awesome event and I wish I could have gone” then you should definitely check it out next time! For more information on Hatch Miami, go here.
